Savannakhet Map and Area of Savannakhet

Savannakhet, also known as Savan, is a city on the banks of the Mekong River. It is considered as one of the country's most significant cities: not only does Savan serve as a crucial river port as well as gateway to the south, but it also functions as a key trading hub with Thailand. In the past, the city also was valuable to the French as a transit point and administrative post.

Just like Luang Prabang, Savannakhet displays what was left of French colonial splendour, though the structures in Luang Prabang are better preserved. One of the city's old structures still worth visiting is the Church of St. Theresa. It dates from the 1930s, but because it is well-maintained, it is still functional. Another Savan attraction that tourists should see is Wat Sayaphum. Constructed in 1542, it is the biggest and oldest of all the wats in the area. However, most of it has been renovated in the 20th century. Meanwhile, Chua Dieu Giac is a Mahayana Buddhist pagoda found at the intersection of the roads Soutthanu and Phetsalath. Another interesting find in Savan is the Dinosaur Museum in Khanthabouli Road.
